Thanks so much for teaching us this very valuable gardening technique! Fresh herbs are the best, especially grown at home.

Great post... I had my seeds all set, and would have jumped on this post... saving it for next year

sorry I haven't been around for awhile, I moved to the US Virgin Islands (I still giggle when I say that) for six months, and it is taking awhile to get settled. But i do think I am caught up, and will be back with new postings...

Come take a look at my new blogs of Island life!

Lol! I should have done the same and stayed out of the way for the shelving assembly :)
We kept the plastic on until all the seeds (except the stubborn parsley!) sprouted to keep in the moisture. Now we take it off during the day so that we don't start having a problem with mold, especially in our cool basement. It's kind of a toss up; too damp and you get mold, but leave the cover off and you really have to watch that they don't dry out. My husband has the fan rigged on a timer, so it runs for a short time every day while the lights are on and the cover is off. With this setup, I find that I really do need to water every day. That peat moss is great for keeping in water, but it's also just as happy to let it out.
A note on parsley: still no seedlings. From what I've read online, parsley is a bit of a tough one to get started, and I've never started it from seed before. We shall see!

Oh dear. I can just see my tech happy husband perking up at the idea of making a CO2 generator. The challenge is right up his alley! He already has the lights and a fan rigged on a timer. Just for fun, take a look at this gardening setup: http://www.youtube.com/user/web4deb The creator calls it "aquaponics". It's like man gardening or something, or the winner of a "how many gadgets can you use in you greenhouse" challenge!

I just checked on them this morning, and they are really taking off. Maybe just a little *too* fast. I may have jumped the gun a tad, so I wouldn't worry about being behind, especially in Montana! But hey, I'll have some nice fresh herbs by March, so I can't be too upset that they are growing so fast :D

:::::::running to Walmart today. Fabulous post. I already have the industrial shelving in the basement, which by the way, I stayed clear up in the bedroom while hubby was putting it together, already have the lighting. All I need are the seeds and moss. Do you keep the plastic on at all times? Is the fan running on the plastic covered pots? Or running on uncovered pots?

Great idea! I need to get this going in our garage with a mini-green house. I might add in some daylight fluorescent lights to give the right color spectrum. Another idea I might do is make a carbon dioxide "generator", I'll have to call my buddy from high school (25+ years ago). He had a "indoor grow operation" in his closet back then and he did a thing with a jug, yeast, and a tube that gave his plants extra CO-2.

I miss my herb garden and can't wait to have fresh basil, oregano, etc again!
